Class 3 Weekly Update

English: We have continued learning about prepositions this week. We have learned what time, place and cause prepositions are and have begun to try and apply these to our independent writing. We then did some independent writing towards the end of the week and spent the next lesson self and peer assessing it as well as trying to improve some sentences within it.

Maths: We have moved on to multiplication and division this week. We have learned how the 4 times table can be doubled to get the 8 and the 3 can be doubled to get the 6. We have also been revising how multiplication and division are related and how you can derive related facts from one number sentence – e.g. 3 x 4 = 12, 4 x 3 = 12, 12 ÷ 4 = 3, 12 ÷ 3 = 4. We will continue to reinforce this next week.

Please continue to help your child learn their times tables as this will help them with our maths lessons over the next few weeks.

Science: This week we continued to investigate magnets and their magnetic poles. We were making predictions about when a magnet would attract another magnet and when it would repel.

Geography: We have done some research this week to find out the names and locations of different mountains and hills in the UK. We have done some map reading to help us with this as well.

We have continued to practise our Joseph rehearsal and the children are doing really well! Please keep encouraging your child to practise the songs at home using either their CD or youtube.

Class 3 Weekly Update

English: We have been focusing on grammar this week and have been revising the different types of sentences – exclamations, commands, statements and questions and we have learned about place prepositions. Next week we will be moving on to learn about time and cause prepositions.

Maths: We have gone over some of the subtraction methods we have learned this term and then towards the end of the week we have learned about doubling and halving two digit numbers.

We will be focusing on multiplication and division for the next few weeks so any help you can give your child to learn their times tables is very much appreciated.

Year 3 children are expected to know the 2, 5, 10, 3, 4, and 8 times tables by the end of year 3 (2, 5 and 10 were taught in Year 2).

Year 4 children are expected to know all the times tables up to the 12 times tables by the end of Year 4.

Science: We did a practical investigation this week where the children were investigating how magnets attract and repel each other.

PSHE: The children have been thinking about what they love about Bicton School and what makes it a good school.

We have been working hard this week on the songs for Joseph and have started to put the production together. Children can find all the Joseph songs on youtube and the words are in a previous post on the website if they wish to practise.

Class 3 Weekly Update

Class 3 have been working hard this week:

English:  We are currently reading the story ‘The Twits’ and are linking lots of grammar and punctuation work to this. This week the children have been learning how to use inverted commas correctly and have been practising this within their work. They have also learned about when to use ‘an’ in a sentence.

Maths: Children have been adding and subtracting in the context of money. We revised our mental subtraction skills and learned how to count on using a number line to subtract.

Science: We carried out an investigation to test the strength of magnets this week. We learned how to record our results accurately and then presented them in a bar chart.

Geography: We continued to learn about counties this week, especially Shropshire. We were finding out about rivers in Shropshire, landmarks, towns and villages as well as famous people who have lived here.

Computing: The children are using an app called videolicious where they are creating a film about the things they love about Bicton School.

PE: The children have continued to practise key skills as well as developing their understanding of the game of hockey.

RE: We have begun to think about what we already know about the Christmas story and the names and importance of key people.

Homework: Your child has been set homework this week, please see post above for details.

Class 3 Weekly Update

Class 3 have been working very hard this week again.

English – We have finished our work on George’s Marvellous Medicine this week and the children were very excited to learn what happened to Grandma in the end! The children really enjoyed discussing their favourite parts and wrote a book review to explain these in more detail. We have also continued to learn about writing sentences with a subordinate clause which the children are becoming much more confident with – hopefully we will be remembering to write these types of sentences in our independent writing after half term!

Maths – We have moved onto learning the column method for subtraction, All children have been practising this with no taking from the next column, whereas some children have just begun to move onto this. We have modelled it with lots of equipment and have worked together. After half term the children will aim to work more independently with this method.

Science – We have learned about magnets this week and have used them to sort materials and describe the qualities of magnetic and non-magnetic materials.

Geography – We have just begun to learn about counties and what a county is. We have focused on Shropshire this week and will continue to learn about the features of our county after half term.

RE – The children have been thinking of lots of ways in which they can be a good neighbour to someone in their day to day lives.

PE – The children have continued to enjoy learning how to play hockey.

Well done Class 3 for all your hard work for this whole half term. I hope you all have a lovely break and I will see you after half term.
