Year 6 Booster

Just to confirm, Year 6 Booster is on Thursday this week from 3:15 – 4:30.

Many thanks.

Class 5 News week ending 28th February

Literacy

We’ve been looking at writing letters for a ‘real’ purpose and children were given the task of writing a letter of complaint about a meal that they were not happy with. We discussed the type of things that might have been ‘wrong’ e.g. food under/overcooked, long waiting times, dirty crockery, ovecharging, etc. You would not believe the stories I have heard about some of your experiences when eating out!

Later in the week, children were given another child’s letter to reply to, in role as the manager of an establishment; they needed to make sure that they replied to the specific complaints and, again, we discussed the type of comments/ token of apology which may have been offered.

Numeracy

We’ve had an extremely busy week in maths revisiting and extending a range of topics including: using the vocabulary of parallel and perpendicular when reflecting shapes in all four axes, estimating and measuring length, reading unmarked divisions on scales and using the vocabulary of probability to discuss the chance of something happening. We also looked at area and perimeter which we will be continuing with next week.

Science

Evaporation and condensation are the main areas which we are focusing on at the moment and we will be using our knowledge of these processes to plan and carry out group investigations over the next couple of weeks.

Other activities…

Year 5s presented their half-term homework on persuading tourists to visit a location or attraction in Brazil; they are currently researching the Amazonian city of Manaus with a view to comparing it to different aspects of Shrewsbury.  In R.E., we have continued with our work on global citizenship and started to look at the work of different religious and aid organisations around the world. In P.E. we have revisited indoor games and enjoyed playing competitive team games with what appears to be an emphasis on competitive!

Year 6 SATs preparation

Thank you for your support in helping your child/children with their homework tasks, to help prepare for SATs. I have stressed the need for them to talk to me if there is anything we have covered that they are unsure about or anything which they would like to go over again. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to speak to me or write a note or comment on their homework.

Photoclub

This half term has been challenging for photography with dark afternoons and apalling weather.  Nonetheless we have managed to squeeze in some outdoor portraits and the kids have learnt a bit about photo editing.

Outdoor portraits by Evie, Aaron, Christian and Joe:

The following week, Evie, Christian and Joe had a go at editing the portraits into effective Mono using www.pixlr.com :

Last week, with the weather continuing wet, we all had a go at using landscape and texture images downloaded from the net to create a texture layered effect.  Evie, Christian and Joe did an amazing job using a variety of blending modes and degrees of transparency – I’d be happy to have any of their results up on my wall at home!  Well done guys!

Class 5’s First Aid Workshop

The course leaders were very impressed with the responses from all children in Classes 4 and 5 yesterday and, as you can see from the photo gallery, they had a fantastic hands-on session!

Year 6 Booster change of day

Next week neither Mr Davies or myself are able to do Booster on Thursday 6th but Mr Davies can do Booster on Tuesday 4th at the usual times from 3:15 to 4:30. Children can go into Film Club once Booster is finished if they wish to.

Many thanks.

Photoclub – new talent & winter portraits!

We made a good start to Photoclub last week with Christian and Joe and this week Evie and Aaron joined us and we had a go in the challenging winter light at some outdoor portraits.  Everyone had a go at framing some clutter free backgrounds and also posing for their partner – don’t they all look lovely!

Class 5 News week ending 17th January

Literacy

Our writing activities this week have all been linked to our new text The Vanishing Rainforest.  We have looked at how and why the characters’ emotions changed at different points in the text, rewritten the text in role as various characters and written book reviews using examples from the text to explain our views.

Numeracy

In Maths, we have focused on converting fractions to percentages and learnt how to find any percentage using our knowledge of how to find 10% of a number.

Other activities included: learning about the different countries of South America, their capital cities and geographical features of the continent; a practical exploratory task examining different rocks to decide how to find the hardest rock in a given sample and creating group compositions of Brazil/rainforest-inspired music.

Please could I remind children to have their P.E. kit in School for Tuesday and Thursday and to make sure that their jogging bottoms do not trail over their heels, as we are using the apparatus this term.

Thank you as always for your support.

Year 6 Booster

Well done to all the Year 6 children in Booster Club tonight. This is the first time ever that we have had every Year 6 attending and it will hopefully continue.

I asked all the children if there was anything specific that they would like to revisit over the forthcoming weeks and we agreed on a list of areas to focus on.  Every child worked really hard and, although I reassured them that not everyone has the same understanding and pace, please let me know if your child mentions finding something difficult.  I will not be introducing any new areas of maths or literacy but we will, however, be focusing on test techniques and looking at past papers, some of which may be new to them.

Thank you again for encouraging your child to attend and for your support.

Quick Sticks Hockey

Well done to the Year 5 and 6 children who took part in the Quick Sticks hockey event at The Corbet School this morning.  Although they did not win the tournament, they beat the overall winners which they were extremely proud of and enjoyed playing with wooden sticks for the first time!

Thank you to the parents who accompanied the team and cheered them on so enthusiastically.
