Maths – early subtraction

This week our focus story has been ‘The 3 Little Pigs’.  We have used this as a basis for our Maths.  The children have enjoyed singing songs such as 10 pigs in a bed and 10 Little Piggies went walking one day and have been able to say and show how many are left each time.

Over the week they have made up number subtraction stories using the farm animals, used number lines to count back and have a go at recording their number sentences.

Read, Write inc

This week the children have revised:  m   a    s   d   t  i  n  p  g  o  c k u  b f e l h sh ck r j v y

Class 3 Weekly Update

English: We have been looking at the features of Newspapers this week, spotting features such as headlines, images, captions, past tense verbs and third person language.

The Year 2 children have continued with their Read, Write, Inc work and have done some writing linked to the stories they have been reading.

The Year 3 children have also been learning about quotes within newspaper articles and have role played creating their own and been learning how to correctly punctuate speech.

Maths:

The Year 2 children have been going over addition this week. They have been using the greater than, less than and equals symbols to compare number sentences. They have also been learning how to use known number facts to work out other addition sentences – e.g. If I know that 5 + 3 = 8 I also know that 15 + 3 = 18.

The Year 3 children have been learning about position and direction this week. They have been learning about right angles and have been identifying these within a variety of different shapes and spotting angles which are more or less than a right angle. They have also been learning about quarter, half and three quarter turns as well as clockwise and anti-clockwise turns (see photos in below post).

Science: This week the children have been learning how muscles work in pairs. Their science lesson was linked to PE where they had to predict and identify which muscles would be used in a number of different exercises.

Geography: The children have been using an atlas to identify rivers in the UK. They have also been identifying the sea in which each river flows into.

Art: The children have been learning about Van Gogh this week and have created their own work inspired by his painting ‘Starry Night’.

Class 2 Woodland Walk

We had a great afternoon in Bicton’s woodland area! The children were challenged to find things on a list that make up a British Woodland e.g. Streams or ponds, Fungi, Leaf litter, Insects, Birds, etc. We will have a class discussion tomorrow afternoon about how our British Woodland is very different to a Jungle/Rain forest

.

3 Little Pigs

Today we built some new houses for the 3 Little Pigs – A house of blocks, cardboard and straw.  We then tried to find out which was the best house.  We discovered our house of card was no good in the rain as it went soggy. Our house of straw looked good, but it blew down when we huffed and puffed.  Our block house was the best and we thought would be even better if we could cement it together!

Volcano art

Class 4 enjoyed their afternoon today creating volcano art in the style of Margaret Godfrey using glue and tissue paper.

Walk around the village

This week we walked around the village to find out what some of the buildings and areas are used for.  We chose a very cold and snowy afternoon for our walk!

Year 3 Maths Lesson

This morning the Year 3’s had great fun learning about position and direction in their math lesson. They have been practising using the language clockwise, anti-clockwise, quarter turn, half turn and three quarter turn by giving instructions to guide people through a maze.

Thursday’s Geography Lesson

Please could Class 2 children bring in wellies and a waterproof coat on Thursday. The children will be going on a walk around the village and into the woods to identify the similarities and differences between our woodlands and the jungles/rain forests they have been learning about in Geography.

Thank you
