Head of School Message
Dear parents/carers,
We have enjoyed another busy week in school and have enjoyed what might be our last few days on the school field before the weather turns.
Nursery
The children have enjoyed settling into their new topic, All About Me. They have been creating self-portraits and colour charts featuring their favourite colours, helping them to develop their creativity while celebrating what makes each of them unique. They have also explored different types of homes through photographs and discussions before using construction blocks to design and build homes of their own.
Willow Class
In Science, Willow Class have been exploring the school grounds looking for signs of autumn and observing how the season is beginning to change our environment. They also thoroughly enjoyed their first Forest School session, where they learned how to stay safe outdoors, identified different plants growing in the area, and, of course, ended the session with the well-earned treat of a hot chocolate and biscuit around the fire circle.
Birch Class
Birch Class have been busy scientists, investigating magnetic fields and using magnets to discover which objects around the classroom are magnetic. In Art, they experimented with charcoal to create striking night-time scenes, developing their shading and sketching skills. In English, the children enjoyed writing letters, learning how to structure their writing for a specific purpose and audience.
Maple Class
In Science, Maple Class investigated thermal conductivity and used the data they collected to create and interpret line graphs. In History, they explored the arrival and settlement of the Anglo-Saxons in Britain, developing their understanding of chronology and historical change. In English, they continued their work based on the book Gorilla, focusing on using rich and descriptive language to bring their writing to life.
Oak Class
Oak Class have been combining creativity and scientific enquiry this week. In Art, they designed their own eye-catching food packaging, considering how packaging can attract customers. In Science, they explored the circulatory system, learning about the different parts of the heart and how blood travels around the body.
It has been wonderful to see such enthusiastic learning across the school as the children continue to settle into their new classes and topics.

School Council Elections – Y1 – Y6
We are delighted to announce that it is time to elect our new pupil representatives for our school councils. Over the past two years, our current councillors have done a fantastic job leading initiatives, sharing ideas and helping to make our school an even better place to learn.
As we begin a new school year, we would like to give all children the opportunity to put themselves forward and contribute to school life through one of our councils. Children who have served on a council before are very welcome to apply again, including for the same council, if they would like to continue developing their skills and interests in that area.
We look forward to receiving applications and seeing a new group of enthusiastic pupils helping to shape the future of our school.
Being a school councillor is a very responsible position, as you have to have many sensible ideas and sometimes have to do things in your lunch times. However, it is your chance to play an important part in our Bicton CE Primary School community.
You may feel a little nervous about putting yourself up for election, but it is exciting to see what happens when people share their ideas so be brave!
People who would like to run for a particular School Council will present their speeches to their class next week explaining:
• Why they would like to be a School Council member
• What issues they think are important
• How they would help make the school a better place
To make it fair, there will be a vote so that everyone can decide who will best represent them. This will be recorded on a secret ballot. You do not have to tell anyone who you have voted for.
The ballots will then be collected and counted.
We are very excited to see what ideas you come up with to help improve our School.
Bicton Junior Parkrun Takeover!
We are excited to announce that Bicton School will be taking over the Junior Parkrun on Sunday 18th October at The Quarry Park!
This fantastic community event has been organised by parent Libby Wynne, and we would love to see as many Bicton families as possible getting involved, whether by running, volunteering, or cheering on participants. Please wear clothes suitable for running in or your Bicton PE kit!
📍 Location: The Quarry Park
📅 Date: Sunday 18th October
🕘 Meet: 8.45am for a 9.00am start
Junior Parkrun is a free, fun, and friendly 2km event for children aged 4-14. It is a wonderful opportunity to be active, support one another, and represent our school in the local community.
A huge thank you to Libby Wynne for organising this event. We hope to see lots of Bicton families there! 🌟🏃♀️🏃♂️💙
Free School Meals – Please Check if You Are Eligible
A reminder to all parents and carers to check whether your child may be eligible for Free School Meals. Even if your child is currently in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2 and receives a universal free meal, registering for Free School Meals can provide additional funding to support their education and opportunities in school.
The application process is quick and straightforward, and many families are eligible without realising it. If you think you may qualify, please take a few minutes to check your eligibility by following this link.

Welcome back to one and all! We hope you had a fantastic summer and are settling in for some exciting FOBS events this term. We have lots planned and can’t wait to get stuck in!
FUNDRAISING UPDATE
We are beyond proud to share that since our starting amount of £2500 in February, we have raised more than £6,000, bringing our total to… drumroll please…. OVER £9,000!!!! With the awesome community spirit at Bicton School and your support, we have no doubt we can reach our goal of £30,000!

SHREWSBURY PARK RUN, Sunday, 18 October at 8:30am
Bicton School is taking over the Shrewsbury Junior Park Run on 18th October! FOBS will be at the finish line selling baked goods, drinks and snacks.
SPOOKY DANCE, Thursday, 22 October, immediately afterschool til 5:30pm
We can’t wait to see all the children dancing and playing the afternoon away. Sandwiches, drinks and snacks will be provided to all children by FOBS. Details about tickets and stalls to follow.
NOVEMBER
Family Quiz Night, 21 November, 5-7pm
