Forest Church 26th February

Dear Friends,

We’ve had a bit of a winter break, but we’re now only two weeks away from our first Forest Church of 2023. We hope you can join us!
We’ll be meeting on Sunday, 26th February, 3pm at Huffley Farm. There is plenty of parking, and dogs on leads are welcome. There’s lots to see on the farm, and it might well be muddy, so please dress accordingly!
We are hoping to make pancakes to mark Lent, and there are hot drink facilities, so we can also provide you with a warming cup of tea/ coffee/ hot chocolate. There’s no need to bring a picnic this time round.
The plan for the afternoon is as follows:
3pm- welcome, opening prayer and introduction to the site
3.15pm-3.50pm- exploring! There are some very expressive sheep and cows, so we may have a drawing competition…or even do a bit of clay modelling…
3.50pm- a brief worship service to mark the beginning of Lent
4pm- Pancakes!
Directions
At the Ellesmere Road Roundabout, take the A528 towards Wem/ Ellesmere. After a mile or less, you’ll enter Broad Oak, and when you come to the Albright Hussey on the right, take the road directly opposite- on the left. Follow the lane down (watch out for difficult to see speed bumps) and you come to a point (not very far) where the lane divides – fork LEFT there. You go under a pylon, and carry on towards the farm. The postcode is SY4 3AE.
In the meantime, have a lovely final week of school and then half term!
See you soon,
Blessings,
Hannah x

Half term activities at RAF Cosford

Date:   18-26 February

Time:   10.00am-4.00pm

Cost:   Free STEM activities

Science Show £5.00, Family (2 adults, 3 children) £17.50

Smartphone Photography Workshop £10.00

Discover the exciting world of STEM at the Royal Air Force Museum Midlands this February half term. Families are invited to take part in a week full of STEM activities, workshops and science shows, nestled amongst the inspiring aircraft displays.

Challenge your science skills, put your tech talents to the test, enhance your engineering abilities and add some magic to your mathematics. From 18-26 February, STEM Week offers families an exciting range of activities, helping children learn fundamental STEM concepts through play-based learning.

Get ready for lift off as you launch a rocket across the hangar and see how high and far will it go! Put your driving skills to the test by programming a Sphero robot and guide it through a maze. Or help save a biscuit from doom in the cargo drop activity, where you’ll need to create a parachute to safely drop the biscuit from a height. These free drop-in activities will be rotated throughout the half term break, visit rafmuseum.org/midlands to see what’s on each day.

Take your knowledge to the next level in the brilliantly mind boggling Science Show. This interactive time traveling extravaganza takes the audience through the volatile history of Chemistry. Expect plenty of audience participation and spectacular chemistry demonstrations in a journey through important concepts from the world of chemistry. Suitable for children aged 7 and over, this exciting and explosive interactive science show will change the way you see Chemistry forever. The show will take place on three days throughout half term, and will be delivered by the STEM Response Team from the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE) at the University of Wolverhampton. Tickets to the show are available to book online and cost £5.00, or £17.50 for a family (2 adults, 3 children).

The team from Raytheon will be encouraging families to take part in the Mini Quadcopter Challenge. Working in small teams you must work together to conceptualise and modify your Quadcopter based on a particular environmental challenge, this could be tracking polar bears in the arctic, or monitoring ocean plastic. You’ll have to plan your route and navigate obstacles as you fly your quadcopter in a mission.

The GE Aerospace team will be onsite Monday to Friday with their flight simulator and wind tunnel, perfect for visitors who feel the need for speed! Participate in their interactive problem-solving activities, including; In The Flight Direction where you must solve the software bugs and restore the power connection in order to fly the plane in the right direction. The Cockpit Captain activity is perfect for future pilots, in this coding challenge you’ll have to complete several tasks, including correctly coding the auto pilot to help the aircraft take off.

If your teenager is obsessed with capturing the perfect picture for social media, the smartphone photography workshop running on both Saturdays in February half term will help maximise their photography skills. In this hour long workshop, you will learn some basic photography theory, tips and tricks from the expert, before heading out into the hangars to practise your new skills. Delivered by Chappers Photography, this workshop is suitable for those aged 12 and over. Tickets cost £10.00 and are available to book online.

News from Severn Loop

Dear Caregivers,

This was intended to be a ‘New Year’ message, but I’ve been very slow off the mark! It was lovely to see so many of you at our Christmas services over the festive period. As always, information about our regular services can be found on our website (www.severnloopparishes.org.uk), and everyone is always welcome. In addition to that, there are a few other opportunities we would like to mention:

·        Forest Church– this happens roughly every half term, and the next one will be on 26th February, 3pm-4.30pm at Huffley Farm, Albrighton (coming from Shrewsbury, turn left opposite the Albright Hussey). Forest Church is a chance to experience the local environment, be nourished by nature, enjoy fellowship and a brief worship service and, usually.. to eat something! Because it is the start of Lent, we are hoping to make pancakes. All welcome.

·        Confirmation- We are delighted that Bishop Sarah (Bishop of Shrewsbury) is coming on 5th November, 4pm for a service of Confirmation. In Church traditions like ours where it’s common to baptise people as babies, confirmation is an opportunity for people to affirm the Christian faith for themselves. We are inviting anyone in Years 5 & 6 who are interested to join the preparation class, which will be run as an after-school club in the summer term. If you already know that your child would like to pursue this (or indeed any older children or adults!), then do email me at revhannahlins@gmail.com. In order to be confirmed, people must first be baptised- if your child hasn’t yet been baptised but would like to consider confirmation, then we can organise for them to be baptised before the November date- this bit can be as low-key as they like!

With thanks and blessings,

Hannah (Priest-in-Charge, Severn Loop Parishes)
